Who’s Been Sleeping In My Bed?

WHO’S BEEN SLEEPING IN MY BED?—-there were a number of  great comedies released in 1963, and a slew of wince-inducing turkeys. Guess which pile this plops in? *

Does that title scream SEX FARCE?  Too bad it’s so unfunny, with a formidable cast gamely battling insipid material.  Director Daniel Mann seemed to click working with Dean Martin, as this was their third in three years ( laughably overheated drama Ada and un-laughable comedy Who’s Got The Action? ) but they mercifully called it a wrap with this 103-minute situation desperation.

Dino plays a doctor on TV (the one good joke in the movie), who has an adoring female fan base. This includes all the wives of his poker pals.  His fiancee (Elizabeth Montgomery) is miffed, so her BGF (Carol Burnett) follows movie logic and Hatches A Plan!

Strained from one end to the other, it came in 100th of the years money-earners. Wasted along the way are Martin Balsam, Jill St. John, Richard Conte, Louis Nye, Elliott Reid, Jack Soo, Macha Meril, Yoko Tani and Johnny Silver.  Allison Hayes, late of Attack Of The 5o-Foot Woman, has a bit.  Written by Jack Rose, who also bore responsibility for Martin & Mann’s Who’s Got The Action?  He had a good amount of decent comedy writing in his resume, but these two Who’s belong with the “Why’s”. When Louis Nye and Jack Soo can’t salvage a line, you’re in trouble. Painful.

*The funny ones: It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Pink Panther, Donovans Reef, McLintock, Yesterday Today And Tomorrow, Tom Jones, Bye Bye Birdie and The Nutty Professor.

Mid-range: The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father, The Wheeler Dealers, Papa’s Delicate Condition. To be nice we’ll put the Disney kiddie-silliness of Summer Magic and Son Of Flubber in here.

The groaners: Come Blow Your Horn, Who’s Minding The Store, Under The Yum Yum Tree, A Ticklish Affair, Take Her She’s Mine, Sunday In New York, Promises Promises, A New Kind Of Love, Move Over Darling, The Man From The Diners Club, Love Is A Ball, Irma La Douce, 4 For Texas, Gidget Goes To Rome, Call Me Bwana, Beach Party, Fun In Acapulco, It Happened At The World’s Fair, Follow The Boys, My Six Loves, Wives And Lovers.
